Mercedes will release their new GLB in 2019, which suggests it will sit between the GLA and GLC in the brand’s SUV lineup. However, instead of being a larger version of their SUV, its styling suggests it could be the wild-child of the G-Class.
The price of the GLB will be even more affordable than the G-Class entry model, and a design heavily influenced by the gonzo Ener-G-Force concept car showcased at the 2012 LA Motor Show, fusing the classic G-Class style with the modern shape of the GLC. Its vertical grille and square-shaped panels will be a perfect fit with the brand’s SUV range. Expect to see a more focused off-road pack with larger bumpers for us serious off-roaders.
While the exterior comes with classic elements, the interior will feature the brand’s MFA2 architecture, first applied to the new 2018 A-Class and 2019 GLA. Not only stronger and lighter, the GLB will also be even more versatile thanks to its optional short and long wheelbase configurations, with the latter providing a seven-seat option. The new GLB platform will use Mercedes’ modular diesel engine, which first appeared in the E-Class saloon. Mercedes have invested more than HK$30 billion in its 160—190 bhp 2.0-litre diesel technology and its matching nine-speed automatic gearbox, and the top-of-the-line Mercedes-AMG GLB 45 will receive a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo expected to produce up to 400 bhp, complimented with a seven-speed auto box and four-wheel drive.
The Ener-G-Force concept car above, showcased at the 2012 LA Motor Show, offers an excellent hint of the styling of the new 2019 GLB.
