Spark Racing Technology's SRT05e

Spark Racing Technology, the official car supplier for the FIA’s Formula E racing series, has released concept images of its new Formula E race car “SRT05e”, a successor of the SRT01.

The SRT05e will feature more efficient aero modifications and better drivetrain efficiency than its predecessor, with a futuristic design that incorporates some of the elements from other race cars such as Red Bull’s X2010, Ferrari’s F1 Concept and the McLaren MP4-X.

Currently, the battery of each Formula E race car only lasts for half a race, so teams have to prepare two cars for each team driver. The drivers must then pit and switch between their two race cars at mid-point of the race. Spark Racing Technology is aiming to overcome this issue by using the batteries developed by McLaren Applied Technologies to ensure each car is capable of completing the whole race using just one battery without the need of recharging.

“Safety and innovation are the primary drivers of this project. We will design a new chassis that includes new battery technology that will be heavier. To reduce 10% weight, we are working on innovative solutions using new materials so the cars can be more efficient and we also have to focus on new developments to keep the drivers safe,” the company says.

Expect the new Formula E race car to hit the track in the 2018-2019 season.
