Stephen Kenn x Victorinox furniture series

There are not many chances to make use of a Swiss Army knife even though it is handy and easy to carry, especially in an office environment. For example, when receiving packages of online shopping or letters via postman, your colleague probably would have brutally opened them by hand before you’re able to flick out the blade. Therefore just be honest and admit that it is not so much the Swiss Army knife’s practicality that attracts us, but rather, its precision and craftsmanship.

Stephen Kenn, from San Francisco, recently collaborated with the manufacturer of the Swiss Army knife, Victorinox, for a series of multi-purpose furniture pieces. The three-piece collection includes the Stepladder Chair, the Convertible Desk and the Storage Column, all of them cleverly borrowing the essence of the Swiss Army knives change of form and multi-functionality.

The Stepladder Chair looks like an ordinary chair, but once unsnapped and tipped over, it becomes a step ladder. The Convertible Desk’s structure mimics how a toothpick and tweezer hide inside the multi-purpose knife. Simply lower the legs, and the desk becomes a coffee table with a steel work surface which can be lifted up to suit many different purposes. The Storage Column’s four sides each have their separate function: a full-length mirror, fold down shelves, wooden cabinet drawers and a magnetic whiteboard for your notes and attaching small items. You can even twist each cube to change the appearance, and the wheels under the columns allow easy positioning.
