Concrete Car by Erik Sommer

New York Artist Erik Sommer has always been fond of using concrete as a material for his work. It projects an image of forgotten decay, a reflection of both modern urban life and the human species itself.

The latest creation from Sommer is the “Concrete Car” that uses a second hand Volvo 240 he bought for US$ 600 as the basis. He drove the car from Beacon into a container in Brooklyn. Once arrived, he covered the car with white gesso and 40 pounds of concrete. It is then exhibited to the public, but viewers cannot really tell whether it is a real car or a sculpture.

The container is actually a well-known “gallery” in New York City named Fastent. Founded by James Powers, it regularly showcases exhibits of differening themes. Using a container for displaying art pieces may sounds strange, but with its industrial surroundings, it is a well-suited backdrop for Sommer’s Concrete Car.
