Surreal Social Critic
Stuart McReath’s illustrations

England-based artist Stuart McReath has served a long list of clients ranging from the Wall Street Journal and Harvard University to the NHS, with his work gracing the pages of magazines, books and annual reports, as well as being commissioned for advertising projects. His style features dim shades with thick and dark shadows, conveying the heaviness of the subjects despite using simple, 3D silhouettes which make the characters look like they are from a clay animation. His surrealist compositions have earned him numerous awards including the “Best of British Illustration” from the Association of Illustrators.

Playing with the proportion and relationship of different elements inside the frame, McReath’s illustrations touch on social issues such as gun policy, drug addiction, debt, and the medical system. His work tends to reflect the situation rather than making a judgement, allowing its audience to contemplate and develop their own conclusion. More of his work can be viewed on his Instagram.
