The function of current headlights is not much more than pure illumination. Now, the engineers at Mercedes have developed a new headlight system that not only offers high precision lighting, but is also integrated with Intelligent Drive for projecting traffic signs on the road in order to enhance road safety. Best of all, the Digital Light technology has passed the development stage and is making its way into production.

Digital Light technology is based around the new HD quality headlights and each has LED chip with over a million micro-reflectors. Cameras and sensors on the vehicle monitor the surroundings and send the information to the algorithms on board for calculating the appropriate brightness. Digital Light also communicates with various driving assistance systems for projecting warning symbols on the road, so that driver can be aware of the road situations. These symbols signify low-grip surfaces, pedestrians in danger zone, road maintenance ahead and lane-keeping among a few others. 

Digital Light will debut on the new Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, which will be delivered to customers in various markets starting from first half of 2018, yet whether it can be fully utilised depends on local laws and regulations.
