Professional Cinematic Drone
DJI Inspire 3

Using drones in filmmaking is nothing new, though these flying camera platforms have usually been relegated to a supporting role up until now — for example capturing aerial footage while the protagonists are being filmed up close separately with other cameras. This is going to change with the next generation of camera drones, which includes the upcoming DJI Inspire 3, thanks to the new levels of creative possibilities and workflow efficiencies on offer.

The flagship cinematography drone from DJI is equipped with the Zenmuse X9-8K Air Gimbal Camera, using the CineCore 3.0 system to support internal recording of up to 8K/25fps CinemaDNG and 8K/75fps Apple ProRes RAW video in full frame. The max dive speed of the drone is 10 m/s, while the vertical ascend/descend speed is up to 8 m/s, with an extended flight time of up to 28 minutes. In addition to the 360º pan configuration, the ‘Tilt Boost’ configuration allows for obstruction-free 80° upward-angle shooting. The 1/1.8-inch-sensor night vision FPV camera is also brand new with a 3μm pixel size and 161º DFOV, and has the ability to transmit live feeds at up to 1080p/60fps.

It is not just about hardware upgrades for Inspire 3. The latest Spotlight Pro software supports automated subject recognition, meaning the camera stays locked on a person, a vehicle, or any other subject like glue. Another remarkable feature is the Repeatable Routes mode under Waypoint Pro, which allows the drone to automatically fly the same route with identical preset parameters, including shooting angle and camera settings.

The DJI Inspire 3 is available for pre-order at US$ 16,499, with the first delivery taking place 30 May.
