Made To Be Imperfect
Fabric Formula

China-born designer Zhekai Zhang a recent graduate from the Royal College of Art, has released his latest series of work named ‘Fabric Formula’. ‘Fabric Formula’ is a ceramic tea set in white, with half of each piece’s surface either uneven and rather rough, or even, with a pattern. These ceramic pieces that seem imperfect are designed by placing fabric inside the mould, so that liquid attaches to the fabric, naturally shaping itself to create the look of a handmade product. At the same time, ‘Fabric Formula’ explores the role of fabric in the process of mould production, hoping to change the public’s usual perception on mass production, proving that products produced en masse can also be unique.
