Jimi Was There
Jimi Hendrix’s London flat as museum

In the heyday of his career in 1968, legendary guitarist and singer Jimi Hendrix lived with his then-girlfriend Kathy Etchingham at 23 Brook Street in Mayfair, London. In March 1969 he moved back to New York. Over the years the flat was sold and used as office space, but it has now been turned into a museum, with the interior recreated according to the guitarist’s taste at the time.

The team behind the museum, the Handel House Trust, made an effort to make the space identical to the 1968 flat, referring in detail to available photos. In 1968, Hendrix personally decorated the flat, filling it with purchases from both mainstream department stores and the Portobello Road market. Among these items were many Persian rugs, various types of ornaments, vinyl records … and a stuffed animal knitted by a fan.

Officially part of the Handel & Hendrix in London museum, on the other floor you can find the recreation of German composer George Friedrich Handel’s house, where he lived from 1723 for thirty-six years until his death. More information on the museum and ticket bookings can be found on the museum’s website.
