Lifelike Motorcycle Companion
Yamaha MOTOROiD 2 Concept

Yamaha unveiled the MOTOROiD concept in 2017, showcasing its ability to recognize and engage with its owner through artificial intelligence. Fast forward six years, and the automaker has introduced the second-generation MOTOROiD 2 at the Japan Mobility Show. This concept motorcycle is designed to evolve into the owner’s “indispensable companion” as the relationship between human and machine deepens.

The original MOTOROiD was equipped with cameras, sensors, AI technology, and features like facial recognition and gesture control. It could rise from its kickstand and move alongside its owner, responding to their instructions much like a pet. The new MOTOROiD 2 continues these functions but with greater refinement, including the addition of the new Active Mass Centre Control System (AMCES) for attitude sensing and self-balancing.

Yamaha describes the exterior of the MOTOROiD 2 as a “specialised interface designed to enhance mutual interaction between humans and machines”. The owner can ride the motorcycle in three ways: the conventional method using the handlebars, seat, and footrests; by placing their knees on the newly incorporated “knee-hold,” akin to a jockey; or in a distinctive upright “half-man, half-horse” style. The machine can adapt to the rider’s posture, even featuring a special part that rises to support the rider’s upper body.

The precise control mechanism of the motorbike remains unclear – whether it utilizes fixed handles, is fully autonomous, or relies on a different method for rider-machine interaction. Nevertheless, one can certainly appreciate the futuristic exterior design with its semi-transparent finish.
