A Legend Is Back
Cosworth planning to return in 2021

English engine builder Cosworth recently joined in on a Formula 1 engine strategy session. While there has not been an official confirmation, a simpler and cheaper V6 turbo engine is likely to replace the existing V6 turbo starting from 2021, a move which should see independent engine builders like Cosworth able to handle.

Hal Reisiger, Cosworth’s CEO, told the media that they have had discussions with some of the existing teams that have enabled them to make the commitment to go ahead. He also mentioned both existing and future teams verbally agreed to partner with them.

Cosworth has a rich history in F1 with 176 wins, ranking second as an engine supplier behind Ferrari and last propelled Marussia in 2013. It is not known whether Cosworth would brand its engine or put it under a corporate sponsor. Currently Cosworth is providing the engine for the Red Bull co-developed Aston Martin Valkyrie, so it wouldn’t be a surprise the three end up partnering in F1. Cosworth won’t need to make a decision until should it want to join the fray in 2021.
