A Final Petrol Comeback
Toyota MR2 successor in 2026

Speculation surrounding the potential revival of a new Toyota MR2 has persisted for years, and recent developments suggest that it will indeed return in 2026, boasting a pure internal combustion engine as Toyota prepares for the electric era.

As reported by the Japanese magazine Best Car, the same 1.6-litre turbocharged three-cylinder used in the GR Yaris and Corolla may propel the upcoming generation of the MR2. This engine is expected to deliver up to 316 horsepower and 412 Nm of torque, paired with a choice of either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Last year, Toyota introduced the FT-Se battery electric two-seater concept. While it represents an electric concept, there is speculation that it could serve as the basis for the new MR2, potentially leading to the emergence of an electric variant alongside the conventional model.

2024 marks the 40th anniversary of the MR2’s introduction in 1984. This iconic vehicle marked Japan’s venture into the realm of two-seat, mid-engine, sporty cars. Its distinctive design features, including wide, low hood lines, pop-up headlights, and coloured soft-fascia bumper, distinguished it from its contemporaries. The sharp spoiler and dual exhaust pipes further enhanced its menacing appearance.

With numerous generations and iterations developed since its inception, each with its unique style, the future of this iconic sports car remains the subject of speculation.
