A collaboration between national treasures
Grand Seiko Avant-garde

Known as the national watch brand, Japan’s Seiko revealed their artistic partnership with “Grand Seiko Avant-garde” at the Baselworld, yet, due to the lack of solid information, fans remained in a state of high anticipation. Recently Seiko released further news on their collaboration with two nationally treasured Japanese photographers, Nobuyoshi Araki, and Daido Moriyama, who have designed exclusive wrist straps for Grand Seiko’s latest Black Ceramics Limited Collection.

Nobuyoshi Araki drew inspirations for his strap from his “Flower Song”, a creation expressing the vitality of flowers created in 1997. Fellow photographer Daido Moriyama mixed his representative works “Misawa” and “Tights in Shimotakaido” together to form his strap. Their collaborative exhibition, “Grand Seiko Avant-garde”, will be opening in Tokyo from May 28th to June 4th. Those who are interested can learn more on Seiko’s official website.

Also worth mentioning are the form and materials used for the Black Ceramics Limited Collection. The five-layer structure enhances the watches’ strength and lightweight property. Their inner shells consist of high-density titanium while their outer shells and rings are Zirconia ceramic that is seven times harder than stainless steel, and much tougher when compared to any other high-density ceramics. The outer shell is 25% lighter than stainless steel and less prone to scratches in when compared to titanium.
