Toyota S-FR Concept
A playful, lightweight sports car for the future

I was a great fan of Rowan Atkinson’s Mr. Bean series as a kid, so it isn’t surprising that I was instantly reminded of the character’s iconic 1976 British Leyland Mini 1000 upon seeing Toyota’s new S-FR concept car. The design’s playful, rounded silhouette and striking citron green colorway, in particular, conjure up images of the “Bean Mobile,” though the Japanese marque’s version provides a thoroughly modern driving experience.

The lightweight, compact automobile is propelled by a 1.5-litre direct-injected 2NR-FKE engine that produces 130hp with 148Nm of torque — specs that are slightly more impressive in light of the coupe’s rear-wheel drive set-up and feather-light 980 kg weight. The S-FR will also only offered with manual transmission, which means performance-minded drivers and fans of lightweight sports cars should be in for a treat sometime in the (hopefully) near future.
