The Journey to System 8
50 years of BMW Helmets

When BMW Motorrad launched its first helmet in 1975, it marked the beginning of a long success story. Fifty years later, the System 8 and System 8 Carbon helmets are set to launch this month, bringing far more advanced technology to ensure maximum rider safety.

The story begins with the original 1975 full-face “Römer” helmet, a lightweight glass-fibre design that prioritised safety, visibility, and comfort. Just six years later, BMW introduced its first System Helmet, bringing a now-familiar concept to market with a flip-up, removable chin section. This idea of versatility quickly became central to BMW’s helmet philosophy, refined through the System Helmet II and III with improved aerodynamics, ventilation, and reduced wind noise.

Through the 1990s and early 2000s, the System Helmet 4 and its EVO and Elite variants pushed material innovation further, introducing composites that blended glass fibre, Kevlar, and carbon for greater strength and lower weight. With improved ventilation systems and temperature-regulating interiors, overall comfort was also enhanced. By the time the System Helmet 5 arrived in 2005, Bluetooth communication had been integrated, alongside quieter aerodynamics and more sophisticated impact absorption.

The System Helmet 6 and its EVO successor refined these ideas further, offering integrated sun visors, improved anti-fog performance and some of the lowest noise levels in the segment. The introduction of the System Helmet 7 Carbon in 2016 brought a full-carbon shell, delivering reduced weight and continued development in aerodynamics and modular usability.

The upcoming System 8 and System 8 Carbon represent the most advanced helmets in this lineage. Certified to ECE 22-06 standards, both feature composite shells designed for optimal strength and minimal weight, with the Carbon version incorporating a carbon-aramid-glass-fibre construction. A multi-density inner shell enhances impact absorption, while MIPS Integra TX technology in the Carbon model reduces rotational forces during an accident. Improved aerodynamics and aeroacoustics, a highly effective ventilation system, and a dual-pane visor with Pinlock 200 ensure clarity and comfort in all conditions.
