Shaping Modern Life
'Cars: Accelerating the Modern World' exhibition at V&A Museum

Victoria & Albert Museum will host an exhibition on the automobile to celebrate the power of design that changed the world and accelerated the pace of the 20th century. Curated by Brendan Cormier and Lizzie Bisley, the exhibition Cars: Accelerating the Modern World will bring together a selection of cars that have never been displayed in the UK, ranging from the first production car in existence to autonomous flying car designed for the future.

The exhibition will showcase 15 cars and 250 objects across three main sections. ‘Going Fast’ explores the role of the automobile in imagining the future, with exhibits including the 1886 Benz Patent Motorwagen, the streamlined Tatra T77 from the Czech Republic and a range of 20th-century concept car designs. ‘Making More’ sees the automobile as the archetype of modern production, with 1925 Ford Model-T and 1922 custom-made Hispano-Suiza Type H6B on display accompanied by a specially-made film exploring the role of the car in various subcultures. Finally, the ‘Shaping Space’ focuses on the impact of the automobile on the world’s landscape, nations and cities. Highlights from the section include Auto-Chenille by Citroen, 1950s Messerschmitt KR200 bubble car and the Pop.Up Next autonomous flying car co-designed by Italdesign, Airbus and Audi.

The exhibition runs from 23 November 2019 to 19 April 2020.
