1956 Jaguar D-Type

In the coming auction to be held in Scottsdale, Arizona on January 19 and 20, Gooding & Company will auction a 1956 Jaguar D-Type that was initially sold to Bernie Ecclestone,  former boss of Formula 1 for 40 years.

The Jaguar D-Type was developed under the direction of the company’s founder William Lyons, and its chief engineer William Heynes. It took the world of motor racing by storm, winning three consecutive titles at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1955, 1956 and 1957. Jaguar built 67 examples of customer D-Types to meet the public’s demand, and the model shown here, XKD 518 chassis, is one of two examples originally delivered in a red over red colour scheme.

British racer Peter Blond bought it from Bernie Ecclestone and drove it for various races including Goodwood in 1956 and 1957. With its exclusiveness, famed provenance and glorious race history, of which a full list can be found on the auction page, this particular Jaguar D-Type is expected to fetch as much as US$ 10 to 12 million.
