Ferrari SF90 XX Stradale and SF90 XX Spider

While Ferrari’s production cars have always been incredibly capable machines, twenty years ago, the Italian automaker developed the XX Programme in order to transform these always-impressive road-going cars into their most extreme form with track-only versions — the last example being the FXX-K EVO, which was released six years ago. Now Ferrari is bringing the XX program to the SF90 Stradale with the SF90 XX Stradale and the SF90 XX Spider.

Just 799 examples of SF90 XX Stradale and 599 examples of SF90 XX Spider will be built, and most interestingly, they differ from previous XX offerings in that both are street-legal models.

The SF90 Stradale’s PHEV power unit was used as a basis for the XX models. The inlet and exhaust ducts, pistons, combustion chamber, and air system of the 3,990 cc V8 engine have all been tweaked, making the engine more efficient and 3.5 kg lighter. Paired with three electric motors, the power unit now pushes 1,030 cv combined, 30 CV more than the SF90 Stradale, and a maximum torque of 804 Nm. The 0-100 km/h sprint for both models only takes 2.3 seconds — 0.2 seconds faster than the standard version. The eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox has also been updated, with the patented logic first seen on the Daytona SP3 offering more engaging dynamic acceleration profiles and a richer, more intense sound.

Aerodynamic design is key to the SF90 XX Stradale’s performance boost. The new, radical aerodynamics solutions include a fixed rear wing last seen on the F50 and a redesigned active rear spoiler from the SF90 Stradale with low-drag and high-downforce configurations that efficiently manage the downforce/drag trade-off. The enlarged front splitter is the result of extensive wind tunnel work, while the larger and wider front diffuser and the two S-Ducts also contribute to the increased downforce. The SF90 XX Stradale delivers 530 kg of downforce at 250 km/h – double the maximum downforce of the SF90 Stradale – which should make it considerably faster around Ferrari’s Fiorano circuit.

As for the interior, designers focused on weight savings, so a more straightforward shape was crafted, with carbon fibre and lightweight technical fabrics used for most parts. From what we’ve seen so far, the SF90 XX Stradale and the SF90 XX Spider are truly pushing the boundaries of performance in road-going vehicles — this might be the perfect vehicle for someone looking to drive their car to the track, obliterate some lap records, and then drive home again without a transporter in sight.
