Potential Auction Record Breaker
1956 Ferrari 209 MM by Scaglietti

A rare Ferrari 209 MM by Scaglietti will be heading for auction in December. With only four examples even built the racing model is extremely exclusively to begin with, and this particular example was once raced by legends such as Juan Manuel Fangio, Phil Hill and Stirling Moss, to name just a few.

Chassis number 0628 was the last one Ferrari 209 MM by Scaglietti manufactured. Campaigned by Scuderia Ferrari for the 1956 and 1957 seasons, it debuted at the 1956 Mille Miglia where it finished at the second driven by Peter Collins and Louis Klemantaski. Shortly after, it finished the fourth at the Targa Florio and second at the Aosta-Gran San Bernardo Hillclimb, both in Italy, before competing in the Swedish Grand Prix. Transferred to private ownership in 1957, it continued to race for a few years before taking a hiatus for decades, and was once again in the public eye for the Tribute to Juan Manuel Fangio Parade in 2011 Goodwood Revival.

The current owner obtained the car after the parade and took it to Ferrari Classiche in Italy for a complete restoration. It is now back to its 1957 glory as a Scuderia Ferrari Works car, featuring a  Tipo 130 3.5-litre V12 with bespoke parts. RM Sotheby’s will be auction this gem on December 8 under the Petersen Automotive Museum Auction with no estimate given.
