Original 4×4 Discovered
Land Rover to restore launch car from 1948

Land Rover is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year with a series of events. The automaker first introduced itself to the public at the 1948 Amsterdam Motor Show with three pre-production Land Rovers. One of these launch cars was recently discovered and the automaker is now planning to restore it.

This particular launch car was last on the road in the 1960s and later spent 20 years in a Welsh field. Someone then bought it for a restoration project but it was never finished. The car was discovered just a few miles away from where it was originally built in Solihull, UK. The experts at Jaguar Land Rover Classic Works intend to preserve the patina of its components, including the original Light Green paint job from 1948. The pre-production launch car has quite a few unique features that were not included in the mass production Series I, such as thicker aluminium alloy body panels, a galvanised chassis and a removable rear tub. Previous owners of the car are being invited to witness part of the year-long restoration process.
