2018 IndyCar revealed

IndyCar has just revealed the look of the new machines for the 2018 season. The new car comes in two specifications: one for super-speedway ovals, which is pictured here, and the other for use on short ovals, road courses and street circuits. The new car design will be used by all teams, even though previously each team could develop its own aero kits.

The chassis itself remains as the same as the current Dallara IR-12. The new body is simpler and less bulky than the 2017 race cars. A smaller front wing, a lower engine cover and lower rear wing together with the removal of the rear wheel guards gives a long, lean look. The body design also allows for a cockpit windshield if one is developed and approved.

Apart from improving the aerodynamics, making the car look good is also a priority and inspirations were drawn from early 1990s race cars favourited by motorsports fans.

As for the road course/short oval package, fences in the rear of the underbody have been added. 66% of the generated downforce will be at the bottom of the car as requested by the drivers. Testing on road courses is scheduled for August 1 so we should hopefully see the second version then.
