Aston Martin Valkyrie's 11,000 rpm V12 engine produces 1,000 hp

With more and more automakers dedicating their resources towards building electric powertrains, Aston Martin appears to be a firm believer in petrol power. One look at this V12 for the highly anticipated road-legal Valkyrie hypercar, and one would hope the art of the combustion will remain.

Developed together with long term technical partner Cosworth, the 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V12 develops a mind-boggling 1,000hp at 10,500rpm, 740 Nm of torque at 7,000 rpm and revs all the way up to an ear-shattering 11,100rpm. If that isn’t enough, keep in mind that the power output will be further enhanced by a hybrid system – details being promised later.

This huge engine weighs in at a sprite 206 kg thanks to Cosworth’s F1 expertise – keeping the weight down is no easy feat when the project avoided the use of alloy to increase longevity, with the majority of the engine’s internal components machined from solid materials. The end result is rather astonishing – one technical feature that stood out to us was the crankshaft, weighing in at 50 percent of that in the Aston Martin One-77’s V12.

As Aston Martin boss Andy Palmer puts it, “Nothing sounds better or encapsulates the emotion and excitement of the internal combustion engine more completely.” Have a little listen – and you’ll probably agree with him.
