Like Mountains And Seas
Steam Series by Bae Se Hwa

Created by South Korea artist Bae Se Hwa, this series of work entitled  “Steam” was inspired by the design of traditional Korean houses. The interior and exterior of these houses were designed with a concept which takes into account the changes in climate. This structural concept is known as “Baesanimsu”, which roughly translates to “backed by mountains, facing water” in Korean. This explains why the geographical location of these houses is vital for this form of design.

Designs which incorporate natural law as their design concept usually highlight the connection between humans and nature. His wooden chair design is explained by such a concept, where its form depicts the ripples of flowing streams from mountain valleys. With one being static and the other in motion, these two elements are merged with each other, injecting the object with a sense of rhythmic beauty. In comparison to other furniture pieces, it feels more like a piece of sculpture; yet, it remains highly functional. This has always been the artist’s creative root. His works have been exhibited at Design Miami for six consecutive years.

First, walnut wood is sliced into strips, polished, and then made soft with the steam bending technique. It is then twisted by hand in order to create smooth curves, which is adjusted according to the distance between each piece of wood. The wood strips are first deconstructed and then recomposed to create an all new form. This creation reflects on the gentle warmth of wood, and it also includes the maker’s perception of nature.
