Last Call For Forbidden Planet Fans
The original Robby the Robot suit and his Hover Car will be auctioned later this month

The iconic original Robby the Robot suit and Jeep from the 1956 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) space epic Forbidden Planet, is going to auction later this month.

Robby the Robot’s suit is regarded as the most iconic prop in sci-fi film history made for arguably cinema’s most famous and instantly recognisable robot. Robby’s original Robot suit consists of three main interlocking sections, including his intricate “head,” the upper torso with bellow-jointed arms, and the legs. Each was constructed of Royalite plastic, metal, rubber, wood, acetate, and Perspex, with a 1950s pair of men’s size, 10.5B black leather loafers located inside Robby’s feet. Also included are Robby’s original Hover Car, an alternative original “Uncle Simon” The Twilight Zone head, a pair of interchangeable claws that were part of Robby’s original design, the resting frame, control panel, and wooden shipping “stage crates” with original painted studio transmittal information and shipping labels.

1956’s Forbidden Planet told the story of the crew of the spaceship C-57D (led by Leslie Nielsen) discovering a scientist, Morbius (Walter Pidgeon), his daughter Altaira (Anne Francis), and Morbius’ robotic servant, Robby, on the distant planet Altair 4. In the (literally) electrifying climax, the astronauts confront the horrible “Id” creature that wiped out the extinct Krell species who once populated Altair 4.

Robby the Robot and his Hover Car will be auctioned at Bonham’s ‘OUT OF THIS WORLD!’ event in New York on November 21, along with other historical items, including George Reeves’ costume from Adventures of Superman, a Luke Skywalker Lightsaber used in Return of the Jedi and much more. No price estimate has been released.
