Iconic Model Electrified
Caterham EV Seven Concept

Since 1973, Caterham has been producing wickedly-fast super-lightweight sports cars based on the legendary Lotus Seven. The British automaker has now revealed a potential move to electric in the future, with the EV Seven concept.

The Caterham EV Seven rides on the existing Caterham Seven architecture and is powered by cutting-edge electric battery technology developed by Swindon Powertrain. The bespoke Swindon HPDE E Axle motor is able to generate 240 bhp and 250 Nm. 0-60 mph will take 4.0 seconds, while the new car is good for a 130 mph top speed. The whole machine will weigh less than 700 kg, which is not far from the ICE-powered versions available.

The powertrain features a 51kWh immersion-cooled battery pack, which uses a dielectric fluid in direct contact with the cells for cooling. The technology is currently being used to cool supercomputers, and Caterham believes that when used in electric vehicles, it can offer better thermal management during charge and discharge cycles than the existing technologies and methods out in the automotive market.

Caterham says it doesn’t have any immediate plans to put the EV Seven into production and will instead wait until battery technology has matured to allow for mass production, though two cars have been built for track testing purposes. The EV Seven will make its public debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July, then at other events including Caterham’s 50th Birthday Celebrations in September.
