Hamilton Survives Low Pressure
The 2015 Italian Grand Prix / Monza

Luck of the day

This has to go Kimi Raikkonen, first for his Ferrari avoiding 9 immense impacts due to the starting stall and then his recovery to fight through the field to finish 5th.

Driver of the day

Felipe Massa grabbed Rosberg’s third place, but Williams teammate Valtteri Bottas pushed him to the limit in the closing stages of the race and he just held onto his podium finish by 0.3s on the final lap. After the race, Massa was heard on the radio commenting ruefully, “I’m too old for that!”.

Legalese of the day

The devil is in the details, as with anything with F1; over the decades the sport is littered with examples of teams “breaking the rules” yet being unpunished because the rules weren’t clearly drafted. This is what the FIA web site said:

‘The team was found not to be at fault for the transgression with the stewards stating that “the pressure in the tyres concerned were at the minimum start pressure recommended by Pirelli when they were fitted to the car.”

The stewards added that “the tyre warming blankets had been disconnected from their power source, as is normal procedure, and the tyres were significantly below the maximum permitted tyre blanket temperature at the time of the FIA’s measurement on the grid, and at significantly different temperatures from other cars measured on the grid.

“Further, the Stewards are satisfied that the team followed the currently specified procedure, supervised by the Tyre Manufacturer (Pirelli), for the safe operation of the tyres.”

Perfectly clear, no?
