Nikola One

Tesla may well be the household name for electric vehicles, but the Nikola Motor Company is set to take the game further. Using the genius inventor’s first name for their company, the Salt Lake City-based startup is launching a hybrid truck named Nikola One. The images are instantly likable; with colour options in bright red or white, it looks nothing like your typical truck. Nikola claims the One will operate at half the cost of a diesel.

Nikola One runs on a 320-kWh battery pack which recharges under braking but relies on a natural gas turbine-driven generator to power the battery. With a full tank of natural gas, the truck can run up to 1,930 km. The 2,000 hp tractor-trailer produces massive torque allowing the Nikola One to climb steep grades at a top speed of 105 km/h. The US$375,000 truck can now be reserved with a US$1,500 refundable deposit, and the first 5,000 reservations will get free natural gas fill-ups for the first 1.6 million km from the brand’s planned fueling station network across the United States. The company also offers a US$5,000 per month all-inclusive leasing package. A definite delivery date is pending.
