Blending Porsche 356 and 911
Ruf Automobile R56.11

Porsche fans with even rudimentary knowledge instantly recognise  the name Ruf, thanks to icons like the CTR Yellow Bird, but for those newer to the game, Ruf Automobile is a German manufacturer that has been reimagining Porsches in the pursuit of speed and style since 1975. Recently, Ruf unveiled its latest creation under its modern classic line; the R56.11, which combines the intimate character of the classic Porsche 356 and the superb abilities of the 911.

The R56.11 is company owner Alois Ruf’s vision of his personal dream, which looks identical to the original 356 Carrera 2 but could easily outrun a 911 S through the tight and twisties. The suspension, brakes and steering are derived from the 911, and the driving experience is enhanced by the 5-speed gearbox of the first generation 911 with its sporty shift pattern (the dog-leg first gear at lower left). The heavily modified flat-four air-cooled motor receives a boost from two overhead camshafts, with pistons, cylinders and cylinder heads derived from the air-cooled 911 programme. In short, it’s a 911 engine with two fewer cylinders.

Precise steering, consistent braking power and a beautiful intake soundtrack via twin downdraft carburettors, paired up with the style and lightness of the classic 356 body, must surely make for a unique and pleasurable driving experience.
