A Minimalist Icon
Jil Sander to Hold Her First Solo Exhibition in Frankfurt

Praised for her minimalist aesthetics, German fashion designer Jil Sander is set to open her first solo exhibition in Frankfurt, Germany. The exhibition, curated by director Matthias Wagner K, will be held at the Museum Angewandte Kunst in Frankfurt.

The retrospective exhibition will take up more than 32,000 square meters of the event space and showcase a broad range of the celebrated designer’s creative work, in the field of fashion, product design architecture and garden art, through large-scale, multi-media installations and tableaus.

Jil Sander founded her namesake label in 1968 in Hamburg, Germany and had her first fashion show in 1975 in Paris. In 1989, her company’s stock went public on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, and Sander used the new capital to expand her business into Asia and North America. She is now regarded as one of the most influential designers who helped to shape the minimalist style in the 1990s.

After selling 75 percent of her company to Prada in 1999, Sander parted with her eponymous label a few months later as a result of creative differences. She would re-join the company as the head designer in 2003 but left again in 2004 due to insurmountable differences. Sander returned once again as creative director in February 2012, following the departure of ex-creative director Raf Simons for Dior. After showing the Spring/Summer 2014 collection at Milan Fashion Week, Sander announced her third departure from namesake label, citing “personal reasons.”

According to WWD, Sander is also assembling an accompanying show catalogue that will appear following the exhibition’s opening.

The exhibition is set to open to the public on November 4 and run through May 6, 2018.
