Variegated Experiments
Chromatic furniture by Pablo Limón

Mother nature can effortlessly create something naturally that would require a lot of effort by mankind. Mexican designer Pablo Limón has taken up this challenge of creating a furniture series with chromatic rainbow finishes. Instead of finding a material that organically offers a chromatic effect, he achieves the result by applying layers of coating using silver nitrate.

The silver nitrate layer is applied one by one over seatings or side tables. The material is cooled down and dried at 32°c before a catalyst is added to create a chemical reaction resulting in the chrome effect. This is done a few times to achieve the depth of colours and lastly the surface is hand brushed with water sandpaper. The final product looks like it has oil slick on it, with floaty streaks of colours appearing on a dark surface. Now Limón has mastered the creation of chromatic effect, the next step would be detailing the shape of the furniture pieces that would match with the process. Just like any hand pouring process, it is not possible to predict the chromatic effect each time so each of the furniture piece will surely be a unique one-off.
