They’re Here. Finally!
2016 Nike Mag Official Release

It looks like Nike’s announcement of the release of HyperAdapt 1.0, its first self-lacing shoes, was just a warmup. The U.S. sports giant and the Michael J. Fox Foundation have confirmed the limited release of the legendary Nike Mag, which was worn by Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly in the classic sci-fi movie “Back to the Future Part II” in 1989.

Considered a cultural icon from the 80s, the Nike Mag was designed by the one and only Tinker Hatfield. With the help of Nike’s Senior Innovator Tiffany Beers, they began to materialise the shoes from scratch. The process has taken approximately six years, as they had to restart their quest three times due to manufacturing and creative dead ends. In 2011, a non-self-lacing version of the shoe was sold in a limited quantity of 1,500 pairs through an auction on eBay, with all the net proceeds awarded directly to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

The 2016 Nike Mag features the Adaptive Fit system that senses the wearer and tightens or loosens accordingly. It is a limited-edition release of 89 pairs; customers are required to enter a raffle online to gain the opportunity to purchase a pair of shoes, which runs from now until October 11, 2016. Entrance to the draw is via nike.com/mag or via the Nike+ App. Each ticket will cost $10 USD as a donation to The Michael J. Fox Foundation, helping to raise awareness of the fight against Parkinson’s disease and give general operating support. Winners will be notified October 17, 2016.

Although the raffle is only available in the U.S. and Canada, there will be four pairs of the Nike Mags auctioned live in Hong Kong on October 11, London on October 14 and 17; and in New York later in November at The Michael J. Fox Foundation’s benefit gala.
