The Lexus Hoverboard
The Japanese marque goes back to the future.

As something of a sneakerhead, I was more than a little excited in 2011 when Nike announced its release of the Nike MAG — a limited-edition replica of the shoe featured in Back to the Future. Now, Lexus is taking things one step further with news of its hoverboard, which a real-life, functional design that instantly draws comparisons to the version owned by Marty McFly in the popular film franchise.

Working with CHI&Partners, Lexus developed the board over more than a year. Its primary innovation is what the Japanese auto maker has termed, “magnetic levitation” — a combination of liquid-nitrogen-cooled superconductors and permanent magnets that enables the board to hover in the air. Adding to our anticipation, a new promo video for the hoverboard was released courtesy of director Henry-Alex Rubin and skateboarder Ross McGouran, who took the innovative concept for a spin at a custom-made “hoverpark.”
