Gordon Murray, the father of the legendary McLaren F1, and many successful Formula One championship cars, is launching a new low-volume automotive manufacturing company called Gordon Murray Automotive which will put innovative car designs into limited-run production. The first model will be its flagship, based and built on a new version of Gordon Murray Design’s revolutionary automotive production system, iStream.

The iStream is a simplified assembly process creating more efficient manufacturing plants designed to be 20% of the size of a conventional factory. The process could reduce assembly plant capital investment by approximately 80% while still allowing assembly process flexibility to manufacture different variants, all aimed at significantly lowering full lifecycle CO2.

“The new manufacturing business significantly expands the capabilities of our group of companies,” said Gordon Murray. “With our first new car, we will demonstrate a return to the design and engineering principles that have made the McLaren F1 such an icon.”

This year marks several significant anniversaries for Gordon Murray, notably his 50th year in vehicle engineering and design, 25 years since the McLaren F1 road car entered production, the 10th year of operation for Gordon Murray Design, and the 10th anniversary of the company’s innovative and disruptive automotive manufacturing technology, iStream. A unique exhibition in November will celebrate all these milestones with a gathering of almost every race and road car from Gordon Murray’s 50-year career, for the first and possibly only time in one location.
