Legendary race cars rarely come to market. This 1984 Toleman TG183B was the car driven by Ayrton Senna in his Formula 1 debut at the Brazilian Grand Prix, marking the first chapter of his journey to becoming a three-time world champion. A rare opportunity to own this machine will arise later this month.
Built for the 1984 season, the TG183B was designed by Rory Byrne and John Gentry, featuring distinctive elements such as a front wing-mounted radiator and twin rear wings. Chassis 05 was a fresh car prepared specifically for Senna and went on to contest four races, all driven by the Brazilian rookie. His debut in Rio ended in disappointment with a turbo failure, but it was clear from the outset that something special had arrived in Formula 1.
That promise quickly translated into results. At Kyalami, Senna fought his way to sixth place despite early damage, scoring his first World Championship point. He followed this with another strong drive to P7 in Belgium, ultimately classified sixth after post-race disqualifications.
Today, chassis TG183B-05 remains a remarkable machine. It is offered in running condition, powered by a correct-type 1.5-litre, four-cylinder Hart 415T engine, complete with a rebuilt turbocharger and gearbox. Perhaps most interestingly, it retains several original details, including its gear lever and the famously misspelt “Aryton” script still visible on the car. Eligible for the Monaco Historic Grand Prix and other classic Formula 1 series, it is equally suited to concours display.
Set to cross the block at RM Sotheby’s Monaco sale on 25 April 2026, the car carries an estimate of €2.8 million to €3.8 million.
