Second Coming
Spring Classic Laguna Seca 2017

The Spring Classic is one of the best events to see vintage race cars from last century getting back out on track. The inaugural event took place on May 19-21 at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in the scenic Monterey Peninsula, California and was enjoyed by thousands of motorsports enthusiasts. All sorts of historic machines, from roaring Formula 1 entries from 1967 to 1984 to thundering American V8s in the 1966-1972 Trans-Am group, were tearing up the iconic 11-turn, 2.238-mile road course. In the Masters USA Historic Formula 1 group, Dan Marvin driving his 1974 Brabham Lotus BT44 beat out four-time Motorcycle Grand Prix champion Eddie Lawson and other 13 competitors for the title.

Spring Classic interestingly also included 1983-2007 WSC-LMP and 1966-1972 Can-Am race cars in the same group, and the 2005 Audi R8 Le Mans Prototype driven by Travis Engen prevailed not just once but twice in the group. It also scored the victory of the one-hour Vintage Enduro Race, open to all close-wheeled race cars.

There is no set date for next year’s Spring Classic as of yet, but expect it to return to Laguna Seca around this same time in 2018.
