Rover Inspired
Velar lounge chair by Victor Castanera

Land Rover, the off-road vehicle brand developed specifically for tackling the world’s toughest environments, is synonymous for offering high performance in adverse conditions and has long been a favourite of a loyal following of hardcore drivers. Now the perfect piece of furniture has arrived for the ultimate Land Rover enthusiast.

Victor Castanera, a Barcelona-based designer, was invited by Land Rover to create furniture inspired by the Range Rover Velar and eventually came up with the Velar lounge chair. Badged with the name of the Land Rover model, the silhouette of the chair is on the subtle side, but it is still easily recognised by any true Land Rover fan.

The seat and the backrest of the Velar lounge chair are both made of ash wood but are produced in two different ways. The solid bottom of the seat is squarish and flat but it is crafted skilfully to bend upwards softly on the two sides. The backrest is made of bent wood veneer for a thin and delicate appearance. “The chair is inspired by the proportions and the duality of dimensions and shapes that the Velar has between the body and the cabin of the car,” says Castanera.

If you find the concept a bit too abstract, take a look at the diagrams for comparison. The curve of the Velar lounge chair corresponds to the fascia of the Velar, while the recessed armrests are similar to the door handles of the car. Even if we put aside the connection to Velar, the Velar lounge chair is a finely constructed and beautifully designed contemporary piece of furniture.
