Racing In An Abstract Way
Motorsport art by David Tyers

Many artists explore the theme of motorsport in their artwork, but few approach it quite like British Columbia-based artist David Tyers, who employs an abstract expressionist style.

Originally hailing from Corby, England, Tyers developed a passion for art at a young age. This early interest eventually led him to pursue a college degree in drafting. After gaining experience working with British Rail and serving in the British Army, Tyers made a significant move to British Columbia, Canada. There, he continued to work as a heavy-duty mechanic by profession while dedicating his free time to inventing and patent drawing. Tyers’ diverse background likely played a role in shaping his unique painting style.

The primary subjects of Tyers’ art are Formula 1 race cars, which he reimagines in an abstract manner using acrylics and palette knives. Remarkably, these abstract renditions manage to maintain a surprising degree of fidelity to the original proportions.

Tyers doesn’t limit himself to depicting current Formula 1 cars. He also delves into the world of legendary racers, such as James Hunt and Niki Lauda, portraying them in their iconic helmets alongside their race cars. Additionally, his “Flight” series explores technical aspects of airplane engines. Notably, Tyers recently ventured into sculpture, creating his first clay piece titled “Ferrari Emergence.” This sculpture celebrates a pivotal moment in Ferrari’s history when Michael Schumacher was at the wheel.

For fans of Formula 1, many of Tyers’ paintings are available as prints or posters, making them excellent gifts. To explore more of David Tyers’ captivating work, visit his website here.
