McLaren MP4/4 Ayrton Senna poster set

Ayrton Senna first claimed his Formula 1 World Championship victory in 1988, behind the wheel of a McLaren MP4/4. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of this triumph, McLaren has approached Unique & Limited to create a set of posters in order to bring the moment back to life.

1988 was the first year Senna drove for McLaren after spending three years at Lotus. One of the reasons for his joining was his relationship with engine supplier Honda. When the Honda collaboration switched from Lotus to McLaren, Senna followed too. The Honda V6 engine was fitted inside the McLaren MP4/4, which is still considered as one of the most successful Formula 1 race car designs.

The set consists of 4 posters sized 50 x 70 cm each and is offset printed on beige rough 180 gsm paper. These posters are part of an limited edition and can be purchased individually on Automobilist.

The first poster from the set features a front view of the #12 McLaren MP4/4 race car with iconic red and white Marlboro livery. The full racing schedule of the 1988 Formula 1 season is also listed.

The “88” poster celebrates the winning year, while the race car is viewed from the back with dirt on the tyres as it would have been seen on any race day.

The San Marino Grand Prix was chosen together by McLaren and Unique & Limited as a highlight, as it was the first race Senna won in the season, showing the world the potential and power of the Senna/McLaren combination.

The last poster from the set is Senna’s signature helmet featuring colours of the Brazilian flag. The design of the helmet didn’t really change throughout the years, although different sponsor logos graced different parts each season. Presented here, of course, is the 1988 version and it is paired with a quote from the legend himself, “I am not designed to finish 2nd or 3rd… I am designed to win.”
