Panerai Luminor 1950 PCYC Regatta and Mare Nostrum Acciaio

Panerai is celebrating its association with the world of classic yachting with the release of the Luminor 1950 PCYC 3 Days Chrono Flyback watch in three distinct styles. First is the Luminor 1950 PCYC Regatta 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic Titanio that comes in a 47 mm titanium case. It is powered by the P.9100/R movement and has a regatta countdown showing time remaining that supports boat racing. The chronograph second and minute hands are central and in different colours, making them easily recognisable, while the chronograph hour hand is positioned in the counter at 3 o’clock in a similar fashion to the small seconds dial at 9 o’clock.

The Luminor 1950 PCYC 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic Acciaio is sightly smaller at 44 mm and without the regatta countdown. Two options are available under the same mechanical set up with different dials for selections. One features typical Panerai style with a black dial and large Arabic numerals. The other has an ivory dial with beige dots markers. All three Chrono Flyback watches are water-resistant to about 100 metres and feature yacht graphics and a “Panerai classic yacht challenge” engraving at the back.

Another new addition for Panerai is the Mare Nostrum Acciaio limited to 1,000 units worldwide. The original Mare Nostrum was the first chronograph from Panerai. It wasn’t an official product but was created specifically for the Italian Navy in 1943. A first re-edition was issued in 1993, which the new timepiece is based on since not much information can be found on the 1943 version. The AISI 316L stainless brushed steel case is 42 mm in diameter instead of 52 mm on the 1943 version for making the watch more portable. The blue dial sports luminous Arabic numerals and hour markers and the chronograph counters are at 3 and 9 o’clock. The new Mare Nostrum Acciaio uses the same movement as the pre-Vendôme model, the OP XXXIII calibre, based on an ETA 2801-2 with a Dubois-Dépraz chronograph module. It has a power reserve of 42 hours and is COSC-certified.
