DeLorean model car photos by Felix Hernandez

You might think these photos of the DeLorean from Back to the Future are film stills shot on the set. In actual fact, they have been created by shooting a 1:18 model car with different DIY “special effects”, then combining them in digital post-production.

Photographer Felix Hernandez has used an interesting approach to create these photos, which is the latest addition to his Famous Cars series, an ongoing personal project that pays “tribute to my childhood to all those cars of TV series and movies that make me happy in my youth.” Shot in his studio on a specially created textured table top, the model car has been surrounded by effects achieved in pure DIY ethic: lighter fluid for fire trails, a torch for light streaks, a rotary for fire sparks and cigarette for the smoke. He shot each effect one by one, then layered them together in Photoshop.
