Fiat 500 acquired as MoMA permanent exhibit

The Fiat 500 is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year and it has received a meaningful birthday present: The stunning car is now part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.

The Fiat 500 was an inexpensive but reliable model that made top-notch cars accessible to more people. It represented mid-century modernist design and over the years it has become a style and design icon and one of the worldwide ambassadors for Italy. The exact model acquired is a 1968 Fiat 500F “Berlina,” best known as the Cinquecento. These cars were in production between 1965 to 1972, and are the most popular version of the 500.

Other vehicles included in the MoMA permanent collection are a 1946 Cisitalia 202 GT, 1952 Willys-Overland Jeep, 1959 Volkswagen Beetle, 1961 Jaguar E-Type Roadster, 1990 Ferrari 641/2 Formula 1 racer and a 2002 Smart car.
