Minimalistic Art
BMW M6 GTLM Art Car

With a 40-year history of artistic representations, the BMW Art Car Collection just introduced its 19th member at the Miami Beach Art Basel event.

The paint scheme of this singular BMW M6 GTLM is by American conceptual artist John Baldessari, showcasing his unique minimalistic art combining different elements of colours, shapes and texts. There is a red dot at the front, a green dot on the sides of the bumper, a yellow stripe in the middle of the hood, and the two black air extractors. The roof carries an enormous red dot; at the tail is a light blue rear wing with yellow end plates. The word “FAST” in a black Helvetica font and an image of a white M6 GTLM cover the left and right doors respectively.

Baldessari mentioned that he had only produced one other work involving a car before, which is an image of a car. The BMW Art Car project then brings his interpretations into uncharted territory, not just regarding the subject, but also moving from two to three-dimensional art. It was a challenge Baldessari enjoyed as he likes the ambiguity of having both two-dimensional and three-dimensional representations simultaneously. His concept made an icon of contemporary life playfully satirical, while also highlighting some of his trademark ideas.

After displaying at the Art Basel, the M6 GTLM will make its racing debut at the 2017 Rolex 24 on January 28-29.
