Mazda MX-5 Spyder and Speedster
Extreme lightweight concepts at SEMA

Since its introduction in 1989, Mazda’s MX-5 Miata has become synonymous with lightweight, fun-to-drive roadsters. In an attempt to take the MX-5s classic DNA to new and exciting extremes, the Japanese automaker recently unveiled two vastly different takes on lightweight, open-air performance at the the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Based on its all-new 2016 MX-5 Miata, both the MX-5 Spyder and MX-5 Speedster are intriguing, one-of-a-kind concepts that, unfortunately, won’t see production anytime soon.

The MX-5 Spyder is a sophisticated interpretation of the classic vintage roadster and was designed to accentuate the car’s open-air experience. Its bikini top was developed by the American Sunroof Corporation with the fabric supplied by Haartz, while other highlights include its specially formulated paint job, carbon fiber aero kit, grille intake and Yokohama ADVAN Racing RS II 17-inch wheels, along with a vintage motoring-style Spinneybeck “PRIMA” natural leather-adorned cabin. The MX-5 Speedster, meanwhile, pares the roadster back to the essentials for “an unadulterated, wind-in-the-hair driving experience” evocative of the open-top sports cars of the 1950s. Notable features include custom 16-inch RAYS Extreme Gram Lights wheels, a new concept color called Blue Ether, interior retrimmed in Alcantara, an adjustable coilover suspension and carbon fiber doors, all of which contribute to a focused, extremely lightweight motoring experience.
