Keeping your eyes on the road
Samsung Smart WIndShield

To help drivers safely receive vehicle information while moving, many companies have developed HUD (Heads Up Display) technologies that project this information onto a car’s windshield within the driver’s view. Now, a joint venture between Samsung and Yamaha is moving to incorporate this technology into motorcycles.

When it comes to traffic safety, there is always a certain degree of risk involved if the driver is trying to control a smartphone while they are driving. Even if it is a single-handed operation, once the driver’s field of vision strays from the oncoming traffic, it must be considered a distraction. Yamaha’s Italian division has  studied this problem and report that 24% of local motorcyclists, ranging from ages 18 to 24, have a habit of using their smartphones while riding.

This is obviously a major concern and is why Yamaha have decided to collaborate with Samsung to develop the “Samsung Smart WindShield” motorcycle concept. Their project combines a smartphone, a connection app, and a mini projector. Once the device is connected to Wi-Fi, riders can receive incoming information without glancing at their phone. In this way, they can keep their focus on the path ahead, even while they are receiving navigation instructions. Additionally, riders can even send out preset messages informing incoming callers that they on their motorcycle and will reply later. This practical technology will greatly reduce the risk caused by distracted riders allowing their attention and focus stray from their fellow motorists.
