Hats off to Mercedes
2015 Russian Grand Prix / Sochi Autodrom

Luck of the year

As a result of Carlos Sainz losing his rear wing’s endplate during the race, a corner worker was dispatched to retrieve the large piece of debris. He proceeded to run out to the center of the track to grab the wing’s remains only to then run directly across Sebastian Vettel’s flying Ferrari. There are no gentle words to describe what would have happened had Vettel not taken evasive action early in the corner. The corner worker should buy a lottery ticket; he’s the luckiest individual we have seen this year.

Luck of the day

Romain Grosjean lost the back end of his Lotus on lap 12, and as he corrected, was caught out on the marbles and speared the TecPro barriers very hard. This time the barriers held their position and Grosjean stepped out with nothing more than a badly bruised elbow. His seat however had broken in pieces. The safety of current-age F1 cars remain a wonder of technology and energy dissipation.
