MINI John Cooper Works x Deus Ex Machina one-offs

The Mini John Cooper Works has always been the fun and exciting model in the marque’s lineup. Its latest collaboration with Australian lifestyle brand Deus Ex Machina has produced two one-off Mini JCW concept cars that embody both brands’ innovative spirit, blending motorsport heritage with lifestyle culture.

The first, dubbed The Skeg, is based on the all-electric Mini JCW, which delivers 258 hp. Inspired by surf culture, it channels coast-bound freedom with a vivid yellow and silver finish, wide fenders, an illuminated grille, and a roof spoiler that sharpens its stance. Semi-transparent fibreglass panels cut weight by 15% while echoing surfboard construction. A rear “Flex Tip Surf Spoiler” borrows from the concave underside of a board to redirect airflow like water under a wave, while roof straps recall the ritual of securing a surfboard.

Inside, the Skeg features fibreglass trays for wetsuits, generous storage, and a dashboard shaped like a surfboard with analogue switches. Lightweight, neoprene-clad racing seats are both water-repellent and flexible, staying true to the surfing theme.

Its counterpart, The Machina, taps into Mini’s racing legacy. Built on the combustion-powered Mini JCW with 231 hp, it projects raw energy through a bold red, white, and black livery. Deus lettering at the rear and classic widened arches fuse nostalgia with function, while four bonnet-mounted spotlights honour Mini’s rallying past. A Can-Am–style rear wing nods to racing’s golden era, and a diffuser inspired by the JCW Nordschleife racer enhances stability and flow, with the central exhaust becoming a visual focal point.

The Machina’s interior strips away comfort for pure purpose: a roll cage for safety, a five-point harness in a racing bucket seat, and aluminium floor plates that provide grip while referencing Deus’ custom bike workshops. A waxed-fabric dashboard with a lived-in patina, simple toggle switches, and an oversized hydraulic handbrake emphasise raw control and mechanical connection.

Neither car will reach production, but both will debut at the IAA Mobility 2025 show in Munich. The collaboration also extends beyond the cars, with a capsule Mini x Deus clothing collection launching globally.
