Gordon Murray has revealed the S1, a new V12 supercar developed by Gordon Murray Special Vehicles as a more refined counterpart to the extreme S1 LM. Although technically a new creation, its philosophy has an obvious connection to the original McLaren F1 road car, combining a central driving position, three-seat layout, naturally aspirated V12 and manual gearbox with a strong focus on fast, long-distance road driving.
The project began with a much simpler idea: effectively an S1 LM without its large rear wing. It soon evolved into something considerably more comprehensive, with every exterior body panel redesigned. The fixed rear wing, extended front splitter and deep side skirts have been removed, giving the S1 a cleaner silhouette. A new active rear aerodynamic system is discreetly integrated into the bodywork, shifting the emphasis towards balance and usability rather than maximum downforce.
The bespoke 4.2-litre naturally aspirated Cosworth V12 produces around 681 hp at 12,100 rpm. Approximately 80 per cent of its torque is available from just 2,500 rpm, making the engine more flexible for road use without sacrificing its high-revving character. Power is sent through a six-speed manual gearbox, with a longer, touring-oriented sixth gear fitted as standard.
The suspension retains the lightweight architecture of the S1 LM, but the ride height has been raised by 10 mm and the damping retuned for improved comfort. Despite additional sound insulation, a more luxurious cabin, and an upgraded audio system, Gordon Murray is still targeting a weight below that of the T.50.
The three-seat cockpit retains the signature central driving position, now surrounded by leather, bespoke fabrics and more touring-focused seats. New dihedral doors with drop-down glass also make access easier than in the S1 LM.
Just 64 examples of the S1 will be built, with Gordon Murray individually commissioning each car for its owner. Pricing has yet to be announced.
