Form Follows Function
Instrumentum by Abidur Chowdhury

Among hundreds of industrial design products, practical tools such as the humble screwdriver and hammer probably represent the concept of “form follows function” the best. The reason is simple: they are tools used for making a living. Naturally they are simply practical, and they do not need any decoration to enhance their functional beauty. However, Abidur Chowdhury, a London-based product designer, wanted more. He saw room for improvement in today’s tools and designed a three-piece toolset called Instrumentum. This could be the most minimalistic and elegant toolset you have ever seen.

Abidur Chowdhury realised most hammers or screwdrivers on the market are made with different materials and styles for the business end and the handle. Therefore, Instrumentum was created with only one material, forged high carbon heat treated steel, using excellent ergonomic design for its structure. The result is a toolset that has a cohesive appearance as well as extreme strength and durability. Additionally, the tools are coated with black oxide for optimised corrosion resistance. But to be honest, will people really use such a beautiful toolset without worrying about wear? Abidur Chowdhury explained that most tools on the market are presumably used by heavy users, while Instrumentum is targeted to people who only need to use these tools occasionally but still want to have a set that fits within with the living space at home.
