Toyota Kayoibako electric concept

Toyota has unveiled an innovative electric vehicle concept aimed at enhancing people’s lifestyle flexibility.

Named “Kayoibako,” which translates to “reusable shipping boxes with configurable inserts” in Japanese, this highly customizable, battery-powered EV represents a cornerstone in mobility. Toyota’s vision for Kayoibako revolves around its interior and exterior adaptability and affordability. The concept van’s hardware and software can be tailored to diverse use cases, thanks to smart grids and advanced social systems.

Externally, the Kayoibako EV adheres to microvan proportions, but its distinct feature is the prominent LED display at the front, signalling a vision of the near future. Inside, the microvan offers ample space that can be configured to suit the owner’s specific needs. Toyota has envisaged a range of applications, from a commercial van with multiple shelving units to a mobile retail shop boasting clothing racks for product displays, and even a campervan with a roof-mounted rack, ensuring adaptability for various purposes. The concept also prioritizes inclusivity by enabling easier access for wheelchair users, including the potential for the wheelchair to replace the driver’s seat.

Toyota is set to unveil a prototype of the Kayoibako concept vehicle at the Japan Mobility Show, taking place in Tokyo from October 26 to November 5.
