Osaka-based Result Japan has built a strong reputation for its original aerodynamic parts and carbon fibre expertise, but its recent projects have shown the company’s ambitions extend well beyond conventional body kits. Earlier this year, the company attracted widespread attention at the Tokyo Auto Salon with the Neo86, a Toyota 86 transformed into a modern interpretation of the legendary Initial D AE86. Now, Result Japan is following up that success with another manga-inspired creation, this time paying tribute to one of Mazda’s greatest icons.

Known as the NEO-7, the latest project aims to transform the current ND-generation Mazda MX-5 roadster into what Result Japan describes as a next-generation RX-7. Rather than relying on visual references alone, the company purchased an original RX-7 and carried out a full 3D scan of the car. That digital data has allowed the team to recreate the proportions and distinctive front-end styling of the classic sports car with remarkable accuracy while adapting it to the modern MX-5 platform.

Although still under development, the project is already taking shape. From its overall silhouette to the subtle play of light across the bodywork, the NEO-7 captures much of the RX-7’s unmistakable character while remaining a unique design in its own right.

Founder Masaki Yoshioka believes there is still more work to do before the project fully matches his vision. To complete the transformation, he is considering developing a detachable hardtop that would give the MX-5 a coupe-like roofline, bringing it even closer to the proportions of the original RX-7 while offering owners greater versatility.

The finished NEO-7 is scheduled to make its public debut at the 2027 Tokyo Auto Salon. It remains unclear whether the conversion is purely an exterior exercise or if it will involve the rotary engine in some way. Either way, it seems certain to attract plenty of attention when it makes its debut early next year.
